Being a compulsive reality junkie, I’ve always watched America’s Next top Model faithfully but even more so when there was actually a Boricua competing to represent. I saw the Cha Cha diva Jaslene the first time around when she didn’t make the cut on season 7. Thankfully, that didn’t stop her. The Chicago native came back for more the next season, and I sat every week screaming her name for her to make it to the next stage of the competition. Again, Puerto Ricans have this thing about being proud, and we love to see one of our own succeed in anything. So, when she won, I became an instant fan of hers and continued to root for her post ANTM career success.
Life really does come full circle, as I was asked to cover the recent MTV TR3s Fashionista event, where none other than Jaslene would be modeling. I was so excited to meet her. I know she doesn’t always get great press, and people are quick to judge but I wanted to see for myself what the diva was like in real life. So as I grabbed her outside her dressing room and asked her for a few minutes I immediately got my answer. She warmly welcomed my questions, pulled me into her dressing room como nada and ordered a plate of spaghetti before getting dressed for her next walk (just in case people thought she didn’t eat).
I asked her who she was wearing at the moment and was a little dismayed when she said she wasn’t sure (Hello ANTM rule #1). I searched frantically all over the inside lining of her dress to find the designer’s tag but alas came up with nothing. “There are soo many designers and clothes in this show you know, it’s hard to keep track” she told me. Sigh. My faith in her was diminishing by the second, but I went ahead and asked her my next question anyway: What advice do you have for Latinas about creating their own style, since we are not always built like most people in the fashion industry? In a surprising twist of events Jaslene had this to say:
When it comes to style, Latinas have to embrace their curves! I know that sounds funny coming from me, because I am so flaca but I love our curves. Style comes from being comfortable in your own skin, so you have to embrace who you are and work with what you have. Stop trying to look like someone else! There is no need for that. When you accept yourself and embrace your unique qualities then beauty radiates from within.
Score. And with that she flew right up to the top of my list of fave TV personalities. I also managed to get her fave beauty product out of her which she gleefully told me:
I never leave my house without using my Stila illuminating tinted moisturizer spf 15. It’s soo good! I swear by it.
There you have it, don’t forget to moisturize chicas! You can watch Jaslene’s killer walk this Saturday when Fashionista premieres on MTV Tr3s.
